Every year Apple releases a new Pro Max, and every year the same question: is it a real step forward or a beautiful repackaging of last year's phone?
After a month with the iPhone 17 Pro Max as the primary phone — following a year on the 16 Pro Max — there's an answer. The difference exists. But it's smaller than you'd hope from a new generation. And in some ways, the 16 Pro Max is objectively better.
Build: Prettier but Less Durable
The 16 Pro Max had a titanium body — matte, dense, pleasant to the touch from the first second. The premium feel is more pronounced.

In the 17 Pro Max, Apple returned to aluminum. And here immediately two things work in different directions.
With aluminum came vibrant colors. Titanium didn't allow for rich shades — hence last year's palette in the spirit of "understated luxury": Natural, Black, White, Desert. The 17 Pro Max has a completely different mood. Cosmic Orange — juicy and noticeable, many pair it with a green case, looks unexpectedly stylish. Blue — rich, elegant, closest to that matte black Apple fans have wanted for years. Silver — a classic nod to older models, though the white ceramic insert around the cameras slightly breaks visual unity.

But in the hand, aluminum feels cheaper than titanium — it's just physics. Anyone who held the 16 Pro Max and then picks up the 17th feels the difference immediately.
Apple compensated for aluminum differently: added a vapor cooling chamber. Remember how the iPhone 15 Pro turned into a frying pan? How the 16 Pro Max heated up during extended video recording? The 17 Pro Max doesn't have this problem. The processor doesn't throttle from overheating, the screen doesn't dim on a hot day — and this is felt in real use, not just in tests.
Scratches: Worse Than Before
Apple loudly announced Ceramic Shield second generation. "Enhanced durability, fewer scratches" — sounds convincing.
In practice — no. The screen scratches just like before. Worse: now the body scratches too. The new colored coating on aluminum is beautiful but delicate. Keys in a pocket, a tiny grain of sand on a desk — and after a couple of weeks, the body no longer looks new.
The titanium 16 Pro Max was fundamentally better in this regard. After a year without a case — still looks pristine. The 17 Pro Max won't give you that.
Displays: Parity With One Exception
Both phones — 6.9 inches, OLED, 2868×1320 resolution, 460 pixels per inch, ProMotion up to 120Hz, Always-On Display. Identical. The picture is rich, contrasty, blacks are truly black. Watching a movie on either is a pleasure without caveats.
The only real difference — maximum brightness. The 17 Pro Max hits 3,000 nits, the 16 Pro Max — 2,000. This matters in exactly one scenario: a bright summer day, direct sunlight, you're reading maps or messages outdoors. With the 16 Pro Max, you have to shade the screen with your palm. With the 17th — you just look.
Indoors, in a car, in overcast weather, in the evening — which is 95% of real use — there's no difference at all. Both displays are equally bright and excellent.

Performance: Faster on Paper, Unnoticeable in Life
A18 Pro vs A19 Pro. Apple claims a 10–15% gain.
In real life — nothing noticeable. Apps open at the same speed. Task switching is identical. Games launch the same. In synthetic tests, there's a gap; in daily use, there isn't.
One scenario where the A19 Pro genuinely wins: sustained heavy workloads. Video editing, heavy games at maximum settings, extended 4K recording. Thanks to improved cooling, the A19 Pro holds performance longer without throttling. The A18 Pro slightly throttles under such loads — that's a fact, although irrelevant for most users.
RAM: 12 GB in the 17 Pro Max vs 8 GB in the 16 Pro Max. Right now, there's no difference — iOS manages memory well, and both phones handle any task without drops. The point of those 4 GB will reveal itself in a year or two, when apps get heavier and AI features demand more resources. A long-term advantage — a real argument for the 17th.
Battery: Progress, but Without Drama
The 17 Pro Max officially lasts 39 hours of video playback vs 33 on the 16 Pro Max.
In practice, the difference is noticeable: with the same usage patterns, the 17th shows 35–45% by evening vs 20–30% on the 16th. There's a reserve.
But a fair caveat: the 17 Pro Max is new — the battery has zero charge cycles and no degradation. The 16 Pro Max has been used for a year — natural capacity loss is inevitable. Comparing a fresh battery with a year-old one isn't entirely fair. After a year of active use, the 17th will likely show numbers close to the 16th's current readings.
The 17 Pro Max battery is better — that's a fact. But not enough to make it a compelling upgrade argument.
Cameras: Marketing Is Louder Than the Real Difference
Apple knows how to sell cameras. New algorithms, improved computational photography, sensor upgrades — the press release sounds convincing every year.
Main camera and ultrawide — the difference is minimal. Place the shots side by side — you won't tell them apart. Slightly better dynamic range, slightly less noise in shadows on close inspection. For everyday use — identical.
The telephoto got a noticeable upgrade: less noise at long distances, better detail with zoom. For those who value zoomed shooting — a real plus.
The most noticeable change — the front camera. Went from 12 to 18 megapixels. More detail, cleaner image, can crop without quality loss. For those who shoot stories, run a video blog, or frequently make video calls — the difference is immediately noticeable.
Upgrading from the 16 Pro Max to the 17 Pro Max purely for cameras — no point. The 16th's cameras are excellent and will remain excellent for years.
Who Should Buy, and Who Shouldn't
| Parameter | 16 Pro Max | 17 Pro Max |
|---|---|---|
| Body | Titanium, scratch-resistant | Aluminum, vibrant colors |
| Cooling | Heats up under sustained load | Vapor chamber, no throttling |
| Display brightness | 2,000 nits | 3,000 nits |
| Processor | A18 Pro | A19 Pro |
| RAM | 8 GB | 12 GB |
| Battery | Good | ~15–20% better |
| Front camera | 12 MP | 18 MP |
| Main / ultrawide | Excellent | Minimal gain |
From the 16 Pro Max, the upgrade isn't justified. Real improvements — better cooling, brighter screen outdoors, slightly better battery. These aren't the kind of changes that justify switching phones. Better to wait for the iPhone 18 and see what Apple does with a genuinely new generation.
iPhone 16 Pro Max
From the iPhone 15 Pro Max and older — worth upgrading. The difference is felt immediately across several parameters: performance, cooling, battery life, front camera. The upgrade will be noticeable every day.
The 16 Pro Max right now — one of the best choices for the ratio of capability to price. Titanium body without scratches, flagship cameras, powerful processor — and significantly cheaper than a year ago. If the 17 Pro Max seems like overpaying, the 16th covers all needs without compromises.
iPhone 17 Pro Max
The Main Question, Settled
The iPhone 17 Pro Max is the best iPhone on the market right now. Cooler, brighter, more powerful, with better battery and front camera. But the gap from the 16 Pro Max is smaller than you'd expect from a new generation.
Here's the honest answer: if you already have the 16 Pro Max — wait. If not — the 17 Pro Max is a no-brainer, and the 16 Pro Max at its current price is an excellent alternative.
