Apple has notified iPhone users in 100 countries about attacks using spyware. These warnings were directed, according to the company, at individuals targeted by government-sponsored attackers. It is known that Italian journalist Ciro Pellegrino and Dutch activist Eva Vlaardingerbroek received notifications. Pellegrino reported receiving the message from Apple both via email and as a text notification.
“Apple detected a targeted attack on your iPhone using spyware. This attack is likely directed at you specifically due to your activities or identity. While the detection of such an attack cannot be absolutely certain, Apple is confident in this warning — please take it seriously.”
The company did not disclose which spyware was used. In the past, Apple has advised victims of such attacks to contact Access Now, an organization investigating cyberattacks. Users were also advised to update iOS and enable Lockdown Mode for enhanced protection against sophisticated threats.
